The Fundamentals of Insurance Claims Procedure 101
You have two choices, depending on the extent of the damage. You should definitely file a claim if the damage is significant so that your insurer can cover the costs of damages and make arrangements for repairs. As an alternative, you might want to cover the costs of the damages on your own to avoid deducting from any potential no-claims bonus.
Following an accident, do the following right away:
Step 1: Report the collision as soon as you can to your broker and the closest police station (you usually have a limited time to do this).
It is imperative that you provide a truthful and precise explanation. If your insurance company finds out that you have been lying, there might be severe repercussions, such as having your claim denied. All occurrences should be reported, even if there is little damage and you don't intend to file a claim.
Step 2: You can file a claim with your insurance company or the other driver's insurance company if the other motorist is insured and was at fault for the collision. (NB: You still need to report the collision to your broker even if you want to file a claim against the insurance of the other driver).
Your insurer will attempt to collect damages (including your excess) from the other driver if you want to file a claim under your own policy and it is determined that they were the more careless party. In most cases, this works better if the other side has insurance.
Step 3: Give your broker the necessary documents (a completed claim form, a copy of your driver's license, and an estimate for the cost of repairs for the damages).
The information you submitted will then be used to process your claim, and you will be kept informed at every stage of the process.
Depending on the extent of the damage, an experienced assessor may be required to examine the damage to your car.
In order to prevent any current problems from getting worse over time, it is crucial to repair any damage as soon as feasible. Please remember that every case is different and will be evaluated as such by the appropriate insurance companies.
That's the summary of the claims procedure.
